Wakefulness in the Three Yanas
with Gaylon Ferguson Sat March 20th: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Price: $75 Members ($100 General Public)In Room(s): Main Shrine Room A one day meditation program, open to all! “Wakefulness is our natural state: enlightened, complete, perfect in wisdom and compassion. It’s not something outside ourselves that we need to attain or become. But it’s also true that some effort is required to get in touch with it — and that effort is what spiritual practice is about. Under the guidance of Acharya Gaylon Ferguson, we will explore the path of awakening in the three yanas, or vehicles of practice and study within Shambhala Buddhism. Both beginners and seasoned meditation students will be instructed in the fundamentals of meditation and guided contemplations intended to help us experience our innate wakefulness. There is a need for both trust in our innate wakefulness and confidence in the path to uncovering our true nature. If we are habitually tight in our meditation practice, vigilantly on guard, or if we consistently lapse into daydreaming, we won’t appreciate our fundamentally awake nature. Like learning a complicated dance, this simple yet profound teaching is something one has to do to understand fully. If we can trust our natural wakefulness, then we can walk the spiritual path and experience the openness and warmth of life. Acharya Gaylon Ferguson, PhD is a senior teacher in the Shambhala Buddhist lineage and author of the new book Natural Wakefulness, Discovering the Wisdom We Were Born With. A graduate of Exeter, Yale, and Stanford University, he received a doctorate in cultural anthropology at Stanford. He has led meditation retreats for 30 years. He is currently a professor at Naropa University and also taught cultural anthropology at Stanford University and the University of Washington. His article, “Making Friends with Ourselves,” was selected for inclusion in The Best Buddhist Writing 2005. -- As with all of our public programs if you are unable to afford the stated amount please contact us in advance of the program at info@shambhalaboston.org and you will be invited to attend at a reduced pay-what-you-can rate.
