What is the nature of our minds and our relationship to the world? This course is an investigation of how we relate to the world and to ourselves. Perhaps there is a genuine, sane way to live. Through this series of teachings, we will explore the Buddhist approach to life.

Specific topics covered in this series will include the three lords of materialism, the six realms as styles of ego, karma, aloneness, the teacher, maitri, mindfulness/awareness practice, and finally, the discovery of buddhanature.

The starting point is acknowledging that some kind of goodness exists in us. It is necessary to take that arrogant attitude, positively speaking. There is some feeling of upliftedness. We are worthy people, and we have something going for us. We are not all that totally wretched. Of course, we do have the wretched aspect that we have to face and look at. That is absolutely necessary in order to realize the other part. But they don't actually interact as counterparts. It's simply that you go through your clouds, and then you see your sun. That is the basic approach, the basic idea we should take towards the worthiness of our existence. That, by the way, is the warrior's philosophy of looking at ourselves.

~ From "Warriorship in the Three Yanas," a series of talks by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche in 1978

This class is for beginners as well as those experienced with the Shambhala teachings and meditation. Each class will include shamatha meditation practice, listening to talks by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and engaging in discussions.

The Vidyadhara Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche (1939-1987) was the 11th descendent in the line of Trungpa tülkus, important teachers of the Kagyü lineage, one of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism and renowned for its strong emphasis on meditation practice. In addition to being a key teacher within the Kagyü lineage, Chögyam Trungpa was also trained in the Nyingma tradition, the oldest of the four schools and was an adherent of the ri-me ("non-sectarian") ecumenical movement within Tibetan Buddhism, which aspired to bring together and make available all the valuable teachings of the different schools, free of sectarian rivalry. Throughout his life, he sought to bring the teachings he had received to the largest possible audience.
