Bodhicitta - A Special Open House Talk
with Khenpo Gawang Wed September 8th: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM Price: $10 Members ($10 General Public)In Room(s): Main Shrine Room Join us for this special visit with Khenpo Gawang, a beloved teacher in the Shambhala lineage. The Khenpo will teach us about bodhichitta - the union of compassion and wisdom. Bodhichitta is a Sanskrit word that translates as "awake heart or mind" and refers to the blossoming of compassion that occurs on the path of meditation. The Mahayana or great-view path of Buddhism centers on this path of awakening the heart through the arising of spontaneous and limitless compassion for all sentient beings, and the falling away of the attachment to the illusion of an inherently existent self. Through rousing bodhicitta, we can live in such a way as to be of benefit in the world.
Our Weekly Open House provides an opportunity to practice meditation on an on-going basis, listen to dharma talks, and engage in dialog and discussion about the applications of practice and life. Join us every Wednesday from 7-9pm.
Suggested Donation: $10
-- At an early age Khenpo Gawang had a strong interest in becoming a monk and studying the Buddhist dharma. Thus, when he was 10, Khenpo Gawang entered the Dzogchen Monastery called Marig Munsel (Dispelling the Darkness of Ignorance). After his first teacher Khenpo Tsepten passed away, Khenpo Gawang stayed in retreat for months practicing ngondro and then journeyed to India to the Namdroling shedra, one of the best shedras in all of India, Nepal and Bhutan. There, he continued his studies earning degrees in Madhayamaka, Prajnaparamita and Mantrayana. Khenpo Gawang studied the Mantrayana chiefly under His Holiness Penor Rinpoche. During his time at Namdroling, Khenpo Gawang met Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. In 2003, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche invited Khenpo Gawang to come to the West. In accordance with the wishes of His Holiness Penor Rinpoche and Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, Khenpo Gawang has come to the West where he is now teaching Western students. |
